A practical, Kerala-tested checklist for keeping your TVS bike or scooter safe and reliable through the southwest monsoon · chain care, brake checks, electrical sealing and more.
Kerala's southwest monsoon (June-September) brings 250-400mm of rain a month, and that level of moisture is brutal on two-wheelers. The good news: with regular monsoon-specific care, your TVS bike, Bajaj commuter, or Hero model will sail through the season trouble-free. The bad news: skip the basics and you risk chain failure, brake glazing, electrical corrosion and tyre skids · the four most common monsoon breakdowns.
This is the monsoon care checklist to follow during the rainy season. It takes 15 minutes to follow, costs almost nothing, and prevents the vast majority of rain-related issues.
Before the rains hit hard, give your bike a once-over.
| Check | What to look for | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Tyres | Tread depth below 2mm, cracks, sidewall damage | Replace if worn |
| Brake pads | Pad thickness below 2mm, glazing | Replace pads |
| Chain (if applicable) | Rust spots, stiff links, slack | Clean, lube, adjust |
| Battery terminals | White corrosion powder | Clean with terminal grease |
| Lights and indicators | Cracked lenses, dim bulbs | Replace |
| Electrical seals | Frayed cable boots, exposed connectors | Re-seal with electrical tape or visit service |
| Air filter | Dust, oil contamination | Clean or replace |
| Mirrors and signals | Loose, foggy, broken | Tighten or replace |
A pre-monsoon check at your nearest authorized TVS dealership takes 30 minutes. Contact your local dealership to schedule one.
This is the ritual we recommend to all our customers from late May through early October.
Chain failure is the single biggest monsoon breakdown we see. The fix is simple:
Total time: 5 minutes. Do this every 2 weeks, or after any heavy rain ride. A well-maintained chain lasts 30,000+ km. A neglected monsoon chain can fail in 3,000 km.
Wet braking glazes pads faster than dry braking. Once a week:
Authorized TVS dealerships keep OEM brake pads in stock for every TVS model. Pad replacement is available at service centers.
Once a month during monsoon:
Cold tyre pressure should be 2 PSI higher than dry-weather during monsoon. This compensates for slightly lower contact-patch grip and reduces aquaplaning risk. Check every 10 days at your local petrol pump (usually free).
Equipment is half the story. The other half is technique.
Wet roads need 2x the stopping distance. If you normally maintain 5 metres behind the vehicle ahead at 40 km/h, make it 10 metres in rain.
Use both brakes simultaneously, applied early and progressively · never grab. Modern TVS bikes with ABS or CBS handle wet braking well, but the rider input matters most.
Standing water hides potholes. Oil sheens (rainbow patterns on wet tarmac) are extremely slippery · common at junction signal stops where drips collect. Avoid both whenever you can.
Kerala monsoon visibility drops to 10-15 metres in heavy rain. Switch on your low beam and tail lamp during day rides · DRLs alone are not enough. All modern TVS bikes have an automatic AHO (Always Headlamp On) feature.
A good rain jacket and waterproof shoes save you 90% of the discomfort. Quality rain gear is available through authorized TVS dealerships and major retailers.
This is a common monsoon issue. Steps:
Do not try to push-start a flooded bike · water in the cylinder can cause hydraulic lock and bend the connecting rod, resulting in expensive repairs.
